Tuba Stand for playing

I perform standing up in my ensemble and have recently added a recording bell to my 2341 King BBb. With or without a harness, it has become a back-breaker. I have seen ads for tuba "rests" for playing while standing, but the only tuba "stands" I see advertised are not for playing. Because I also narrate our concerts, I would like a "stand" that I can leave while speaking. I have seen Vince Giordani (Nighthawks) use this type of stand while going between upright bass and tuba. Sumner Erickson used something like this when he stood and played. even though a little pricey, it seems sturdy. you would need to lengthen the stand for playing height but i think this is the closest to a "playing-while-standing" stand.

If I read this right, you would like the tuba to stand independently while you walk over to a mic or such? Not to hold it while playing in a standing position, then set it down to go to the mic? It seems, if that be the case, that a TubaTamer by Wenger would work out for you.This has "arms" that hook around the tuba and lock it into position; this was often used for kids so they wouldn't have to hold it on the lap and to safeguard the horn against dropping it.Assuming it extended enough to accomodate your height, this would be ideal.

Sumner uses the Wenger Tuba Tamer and I recommend it if you have the scratch. Height is not much of a problem. If you're using it the way Sumner does, The trick is to set the tuba at a pretty sharp angle away from you (this is adjustable), and then to tip it back onto the two rear legs to play. Those legs are long and stable and sturdy and it doesn't feel risky at all to do it that way, and you still have no weight to bear while playing, which is the real benefit.

That's not the Wenger. That's a much cheaper version - looks like that Hercules stand.

No, I saw that one. It's a cheap imitation. Take a look at the legs. Then look at the genuine Wenger up for $250 as well.

I love my Wenger Tubatamer. tbn.al helped me buy his and wants it back.He can have it when I croak.
It is the only stand that has the weight to hold my recording tuba in a big wind outside and not blow over.
It is the only stand I trust enough to walk away from my tuba and get to a microphone or play guitar.
I use a light flimsy stand for inside gigs because it's lighter and smaller but I store my old King on the Tubatamer.

I have one of the 'cheapos'. I recently bought a REAL Wenger 'TubaTamer' and can tell you that it's the ONLY way to go if you want a reliable, sturdy play stand. I bought the Wenger because one day I'll be too old a tired to sit and hold one of these 'beasts' I play regularly. Right now, I have a 20/21J sitting in the stand in my music room. Some day I may have to pay someone to haul it around and set it up. But... at least I'll still be able to play it! Get a Wenger. They pop up on Ebay once in a while.

You are right!! it is a knock off by M&M... How can they get away with calling it a tuba tamer I thought that name was synonymous with the Wenger... Oh well anyway to make a buck<s>BigBob
