Christmas has lots of good music on the radio and the TV. Last night had a good performance of Mozart/Figaro on TV, but I couldn’t stand the modern staging from Salzburg 2007. So I worked a bit on the computer while listening.

Formally the mode formed on the subdominant it is widely used on the tonic in many modern and jazz compositions.

The situation around this scale format is a bit more spicy:
This Lydian Dominant mode is a hybrid, by some called a synthetic scale. It does not fit the patterns of intervals found in the diatonic modes. It is derived from the concept that scales are compressed chords, where the chord behind this mode is of this type G13#11. This mode rather is a Mixolydian mode given a Lydian flavour by raising the 4th step than a Lydian mode made dominant by lowering the 7th step. Hence this mode is notated in the keys, which reflect its dominant function.
This Lydian Dominant mode also is called the natural or the overtone scale, because it is made up of the 1st, 9th, 5th, 11th, 3rd, 13th, and 7th partials of the Pythagorean series of partials.
The Lydian Dominant scale also may be considered the 4th mode of the ascending melodic scale.
I recommend playing scales, but I wouldn’t recommend starting with the two modes mentioned above here. The Lydian mode is part of my own routines, the Lydian Dominant mode will be incorporated from now.
Newcomers to scales rather should start here:

My download project is organised within the Yahoo groups system. Aside from the scales routines it holds several brass relevant arrangements, many directed towards playing in churches.
