Hello fellow tubists!

I've been reading this site for a while now and I haven't posted anything, so here we go

for christmas I got about $200 in amazon gift cards and $30 in itunes, and I was wondering what would be the best thing(s) to get in relation to being an aspiring tuba player (such as cds or any tuba-related merchandise)?

If you are not currently taking private lessons, "sell" your gift cards to friends, and use the $$ to start taking lessons. If you are already taking lessons, use the proceeds to make sure you can continue to take lessons. This would be the best use of funds for an aspiring tubist.

OK...This is just my way of emphasizing to a new TubeNet member the importance of lessons. I am sure you will receive many useful suggestions from members of this forum.

well I'm all ready getting private lessons, and my parents are paying for them so that's not a worry...but is there anything I should REALLY look for/purchase since I have all of these gift cards and almost not a clue?

Well, if they're from a family member or anyone else you'll run into again, spend the cards in the intended places.

well I all ready got song and wind for christmas as well, so I don't need to buy that again

and Art, I'll look into those recordings, and I'll see you at our lesson at 4:00 on wednesday

Balance. I would consider a recording or two to enjoy and study of a professional tuba player, and, on the recommendation of a band director or tuba professor, selected etude books with good stuff to practice, practice, practice on aspects of your playing that need improvement.

That's what I would do, because God knows I need to!

Art's your teacher? Ask him about recordings to buy, don't listen to the TNFJ!!

If you don't already have an iPod or a nice set of headphones, those are good to get too.

To me, there's only so many tuba CDs I can listen to at any given time.

You would also do well to get some orchestra/wind ensemble CDs and start to learn/recognize some of that rep. Got a favorite composer?

And even some non-tuba stuff too, some good jazz like Coltrane, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong...

well for composers I like Bach, Holsinger, and Ticheli (though for all three of them there are numerous cds). What CDS would you recommend for orchestra/wind ensemble?

and for Jazz I like anything Gordon Goodwin does, Sinatra is the man, Maynard is just godly (and my school Band Teacher's Idol :p), Denver and the Mile High Orchestra is AMAZING, and really any thing with funk or swing.

btw. what movie soundtracks are good because I like those too...

There's lots of great information in The Tuba Family (Paperback), by Clifford Bevan, 65.00 USD through Amazon. I'm not sure whether it can be combined with other Amazon purchases to qualify for free shipping.

Some Grinch-like, outside the consumer box, ideas:
1. Barter for some piano lessons (which I wish I had taken).
2. Get some items that can be used by a local charity or families in need.
3. Exchange (or return to the giver) for cash/check to start your savings account.
4. Barter with friends for transportation to and lodging at the free Army Tuba Euphonium Conference at Ft Myer, VA, January 27-30, 2010.
