New Nirschl CC

Post by Alex C »

Gemstone Music (Gemeinhadt/Nirschl/Stenphanhouser/etc.) will have their new W. Nirschl CC tuba, the J-880 on display at the Texas Music Educators Conference in Feb.

In case you are unfamiliar with this instrument, it is supposed to be made from the same tooling that other 4/4 CC Nirschl tubas are made from. I haven't played it but Dick Barth was responsible for bringing it to life.

The BBb Nirschl he has produced is excellent and has a street price of around $4000.

One more reason to go to TMEC.

So apparently the American CC tuba isn't dead, it's just being designed and made somewhere else.

I'm hoping to be able to give one of these a toot very soon. The Gemstone rep is coming by my store with one in the next week or two. From what I've heard, these may make a big splash. The price point and apparent quality/playability are going to make these popular. It's nice to see a good player at the price point.

Please post your report on the horn after the encounter. Thanks!

No. From all accounts, they're being made in the Weril factory in Brazil from German-designed machinery & mandrels modeled after the original York mandrels that were purchased by B&M, which was eventually purchased by Nirschl.

HI-
Just got an email that the new W. Nirschl CC has arrived in the US and it WILL be at the Army Tuba Conference and TMEA. It will be at Eastman this Tuesday evening on its way to Virginia. Word is the street price for the silver CC 5v (4 piston, 1 rotor) with MTS case will be @ $5500. Looking forward to trying it Tuesday.

Who will be selling these horns? The only dealer I know who sells Nirschl is Dillons.

After the roller coaster that was the end of 2009, Gemeinhardt is back on firm ground. We are emphasizing the Gemeinhardt name and getting away from Gemstone which only served to confuse people. We are Gemeinhardt LLC, selling Gemeinhardt woodwinds and W. Nirschl Brass. We continue as the distributor of Weril and P. Weingrill brass.
Does Gemeinhardt have a separate list of authorized dealers?

Hi-
Just got back from Eastman this evening. The 5 valve silver CC W. Nirschl J-880 tuba was there to try--FANTASTIC!! Excellent pitch, response, workmanship--a magnificent horn!
If you try it at the Army Tuba Conference and/or at TMEA--you will love this horn. Just remember is is a Nirschl--like Meister Nirschl's 4/4 and 6/4 CC's, it has the Jacobs York style leadpipe--at an angle. Bring a tuba stand with you--it does make it easier to hold.

See Don above with the W. Nirschl. Enjoy playing this horn--it is fantastic!

Yeah, that'd downright awkward. I remember the Nirschl I tried a few years ago had a short pipe, but not like 45 degree twist the tuba kind of short. Seems like tradition, York legacy, blah blah should be cast aside. I think they'll get more complaints about that than they'll be willing to hear (from hacks like me! Hell, if Don is fine with it... :) But there will be plenty more "me's" buying tubas than "Don's".)

The tuba, compared to the body, looks more perpendicular than parallel. I agree with Brett on this one.
