TUBA--An alcoholic drink of the Philippines made from the sap of the fruit branch of the coconut tree. "When fresh, it is a very pleasant beverage, but after it ferments is mildly intoxicating and in lager portions makes the drinker stupid and sleepy."
(Lifted from the published diary of William Corbusier, an Army surgeon between 1868 and 1904.)
