Ohio State MB Baritones vs. Marching Euphs?

While watching the Rose Bowl game - when the Ohio band was on the field at halftime I saw a lot of "old fashion" baritones with bells tipped forward. Later on, when the band was playing in the stands I saw many more "Marching Euphoniums" and no obvious baritones - is that a whole other section, or do they switch horns off the field? Or was it a camera trick?

Edit: watched the post game performance and did see the Baritones again, so I guess it was just a camera choice problem.

BTW, the Oregon band looked very "Oregonian" in their down(?) vests, ball caps, and sweatpants... and what was that D&BCish stage band chart they were playing? - I could not recognize the tunes at all ;-)

Probably both. I didn't watch closely, but did see that Oregon used the dreaded Mellophoniums for the F Horn parts. They are wonderful marching instruments that sound upclose like someone is hurting livestock.

The O's used to have a cool uniform that was part rain pancho/hood assembely, I didn't care for the nike sweatpants look.

Hey...I resemble that remark. I try to play the mellophonium whenever I can in pep band (basically, whenever it's not an important enough game for tuba and they have the tenor sax stuff covered. It may sound like hurting livestock, but when you get out to where you can hear everyone, I think it actually sounds pretty solid.

I agree! Played one a bit when in school, they really fill that part better than either tenor sax, or trombone played in the higher range, imo.

What I found out today about the Oregon band "uniforms" is that they were designed by Phil Knight (Daddy O) so that is what they wore. Looked like "casual Friday" to me; did not care for the look and didn't recognize what they played. Much prefered THE Ohio State U look, but am bummed my Ducks lost. OTOH, got to watch 4 of my good friends play in the pep band for the women's hoops game tonight; they sounded good!!

I heard a rumor that John Mueller was going to do a clinic at Midwest recommending that band directors k.i.s.s. and buy 4-valve bell-front baritones for all-around use. Did anyone attend his clinic?
I was there. Yes, he did advocate the use of 4-valve bell front baritones for year round use.
It was a good presentation and had many great things to say and made some wonderful points.
The kind of stuff that some band directors need to hear over and over again.

What caught my eye was the session title.

"The 7 deadly Sins of Low Brass", Here's a PDF in case anyone was interested.
