Here are some images of Kanstul's new 4/4 tubas, based on the classic 1930's J.W. York design. These will be shown at this week's NAMM show, along with a front action 5-valve BBb, model 33 (not pictured). A front action 5-valve CC version will be available mid-2010. The fifth valve is Kanstul's CR design, which is a lightweight hollow rotor with a fully enclosed airway. These will be made to order in Anaheim, California. The bottom bows are 2-piece, and are hand hammered. Production models will have ornate engraving on the bell, and will include an SKB hard case. List pricing looks to be $8000-10500 USD based on valve and finish options, to be finalized next week, street price should be lower. Some great players are planning to endorse these.

They look great, but I can't help but wonder -- why, when everybody else from Besson to York got rid of the open circuit following the bugle for the 4th valve tubing because it was such a dent magnet?

Steve, with all the valves and bells Kanstul has, has there been any thought given to a modern bore valved tenor trombone, valved bass, or cimbasso?

Kanstul makes 2 valve trombones, though only one is in the catalog: the 959, and also the new 1606V, which has a Williams 6 style bell. Both are .500" bore, slightly larger than the King and Bach models, and more similar to the old Conn 5V.

Valve bass trombones play like ***; don't wish for one. But he'll be glad to make one for you. As with any custom horn, put your money down, and you're not allowed to ask how much or how long.

Cimbasso...now that's another story. A local player seeks a CC cimbasso, and that may be a project for later this year. We'll see. So far it looks good.

I mean a Bb, probably, instrument with 4 piston or rotary valves in either .547, .562, or .590 (since I imagine the bass trombone valves and the non-comp euphonium valves are that size).
Valve bass trombones DON'T have to play badly. This could be an opportunity to prove that, maybe selling a valve handslide section to go with people's bass bells?

The online Kanstul store seems to have their tubas at some sort of 30% off discount of the higher prices, so I am assuming final prices of these would be somewhat akin to that. So approximately $5600-8000.

These horns look fantastic and I'd love the front-valve Eb, but they're way out of my price range.

My main ergonomic concern with those horns is the 3rd valve slide on the first horn, the front valve BBb. As soon as this slide's pulled out, it'll probably hit the seat of any chair that's being used and will either dent or be pushed back in (or both). The slide already has a loop in the end, and I really think the loop needs to be longer so that the end of the slide will be further from the bottom of the horn.

This is a problem I've had experience with in the past. Some of the older BBb's I've used in the past with long, straight 3rd valve slides did this.

The front valve Eb looks to have the same valve set as their new small C, but tilted at a different angle.

More accurately, nobody really needs a C tuba (Chinese or otherwise).

But I suppose you're right. It's much better to have an stuffy, boring F tuba (with "the sound" that most people can't even seem to produce on it) and a big, tubby, out-of-tune C tuba.
