Watched the US Army Blues (a full big band, where i had expected a medium sized groups, when I saw the name) in a separate QuickTime window as offered by the page linked to above here. Better, actually very much better, sound quality than the lecture with Doug Elliot earlier in the day, which had annoying noise peaks like bad radio when I was a kid (that’s long ago).

I am not too convinced of the format of jazz in a conference hall. It is hard to get things cooking. The soloists were:

SSgt. Ryan McGeorge (The U.S. Marine Band), euphonium.

SMSgt. Gil Corella (The U.S. Air Force Band), tuba.

Both strong players, but the tuba appealed the most to me. However the last piece had both soloists together in Take the A-Train, and there the writing for euph and CC tuba (Conn 56J I guess) was a scoop. They didn’t play the thematic material in octaves, but in sevenths (or ninths). The resulting sound was very much Ellington and very much conical low brass with a twist.

You're right, Klaus. I was lucky enough to be there in the hall. I don't know the exact tuning, but it reminded me of the tuning of the whistles on the old steam locomotives (even though the A Train is electric and runs in NY City).

Sorry about the noise. I'm still trying to figure out the source of that. Not sure if that is coming from our end or the server end. The audio is clean going into the encoder.

Today & tomorrow's concerts all have video, so the QuickTime will be available.

Not to split hairs, but the final duet last night was Caravan. Already popular when made popular by Ocean's Eleven.

Enjoy the rest of the conference. It is always good to hear feedback on the broadcast, both the good and bad.

Yes, Caravan. Still a very good way of setting the soloists.

Right now listening to the two university teachers telling about making it in the music business. The video comes through very jerky with sound falling out often. I went to the broadcast coming via iTunes om my large Mac hooked up on a 10Mbits connection. Quality is good, no noise, but occasional drop-outs.

As far as the archives go, we can only archive the audio recordings in a streaming format due to copyright restrictions.

Klaus - If you continue to have connection problems with the video please let me know (I know this will all be over soon). We are streaming @ about 1MBit but I can run a separate lower bandwidth video stream if you continue to have problems.

How do we get video? I hear the audio stream just fine using QuickTime - but no video. Maybe the video starts later tonight? (using DSL @ about 2.2 mps capability)

Anybody know he arranger of the Susato suite that the Armed Forces TE ensemble played on Friday night?

You should be getting audio & video. Yet another great feature of the QuickTime plugin. Maybe try the external player link or quit your browser and reload.

Oh and the Susato was arranged by John Stevens.

Got the last part of the TE ensemble concert. Video was high quality, sound was fine. I suspect part of the problem with the transmissions of the morning sessions being rush hours on the web. Mornings are always a bit slower here due to all business reading their mail. My only technical complaint is a minor one. When my sound level is right for the music, I cannot hear the introductions by the conductor between numbers.

The playing was fine, but as with the recordings from the London TC in 2008 I find it hard to hear the inner parts in recordings of TE ensembles.

I like the long gala skirts of the female players. It is a great pity they don’t use them for parades.

Since you said we should be getting video along with audio, I just updated my QuickTime player to the latest ver... 7.6.5. Hopefully this will do the trick.

FRom the schedule I had expected Dennis AsKew conducting the last reading (which I didn’t watch right from the beginning). However the first director I saw rather looked like Brian Bowman. I haven’t got a chance to se the face of the current conductor, at least I didn’t recognize him). And now Brian Bowman just returned.

Yes, that's Dr. Brian Bowman. Maybe there was a change due to the weather problems - not sure.

Boy, there's one tuba player that seems to have his own microphone or is parked right below the active mics. Not sure who that is.

Yes, this is very funny. I often have complained lack of inner voices in low brass choir recordings. Here it is one bass tuba with a bit of fuss around him. He reads and cheats pretty well.

Just out of curiosity, the tuba just left of center, back row, with a bell that looks like a satellite dish--anyone have an idea of brand/model?

Dennis AsKew decided yesterday that it was a bad idea to drive up through the worst of the storm (it was bad from south of Richmond up to the PA border or so).

Dr. Bowman was kind enough to fill in for Dennis. He did a fantastic job!

As for the mic... There was a live mic (one without a switch, or I would have turned it off after I made an announcement). I didn't know that particular mic was piped into the broadcast--I thought it was simply to the PA system for the hall. My apologies!
