Professional what?

The title (according to tubenet) is a little vague and so I'm curious as to what this term applies to those who are listed as such.

This is primarily for those who have "professional" listed by tubenet, though I'd also be curious to see where the majority of "us" rank. (I'll bet it's not professional tuba player )

I always figured it meant someone who makes a significant amount of money by performing.

What does "significant" mean though? Meh, I'll leave that for other people to decide.

When Sean added the professional moniker, he left it to members to request it based on whether they earn their principle income from playing tuba or euphonium. He did not establish a hard rule, but rather left it to members to determine for themselves whether they want the designation, and whether it is appropriate for them. I suspect his goal was to give working pros a way to distinguish themselves from the school kids and also from we hobbyists, and that's fine with me.

I know people who get their entire earned income from performing and teaching privately who have not asked for that label, and there might be a few who have it who were pushing that fuzzy boundary Sean established.

So, as before, I evaluate what people say on the merits of what they say, backed up by the history of what that person has said. I do find that the "professional" label does nearly always correspond to comments that reveal some experience, so it has earned its way into my formula. The real name (or known screen name) of a person I recognize counts far more.

Bottom line: If you think it applies to you, send a message to Sean asking for it, and stating your reasons.

For me, this is more about what people actually are. After listing the poll, I decided that a better question would probably be a general quiry as to the profession we hold, rather than relating to the "professional" moniker.

Crandy has a good question. I recall easily voting in earlier polls, but the last two just haven't grooved. Nothing lights up or responds to clicks.

That is not fact. I never requested it.

Cameron, I'm reporting what Sean wrote at the time. But I know also that Sean said he added the label to many he knew to be professionals, particularly his colleagues in the military bands, to get the program started.

Although I used to play full-time and now play professionally part-time, the bulk of my income is made in the repair shop. I did not see a choice listed for music business professional, which would probably most accurately describe where several of us are.

Of my playing, I'd say that it is 45 percent tuba, 50 percent string/electric bass, and 5 percent bass trombone.

ALL of my personal income is from playing music and repairing instruments. I'd rather be a 'sponsor'. There's less pressure!

I'm a pro. Asked how to get the "professional" designation. Never got an answer.

I won't put words in his mouth, but there are a few members here who (as commented on earlier in this post) did not request it.

Actually, it's a fake. Since there was no response to my requests, another board member kindly added it to my avatar...
