Today would've been Jerry Goldsmith's 81st birthday. Arguably one of the most successful, prolific film composers of modern times. Among his many fine scores, Poltergeist, Dennis the Menace and Star Trek - The Motion Picture stand out with some great writing for tuba. Poltergeist in particular features some of the most evil-sounding tuba playing ever recorded (Tommy Johnson, Jim Self and Norm Pearson lent their artistry to that score). It's a shame that more of this great music isn't programmed in concert settings, not only for Jerry's work, but many other composers as well. It's also a shame that so many of these greats scores are long-since out of print on CD, and very difficult/expensive to find.
Anyway, we're thinking of you today, Jerry, and the great musical legacy you left behind for us to enjoy!

Re: Happy Birthday, Jerry Goldsmith!
Amen. He was my favorite modern-era soundtrack composer.
