In your opinion, what are the five top solo pieces that a euphonium major MUST know by the end of a bachelors degree?

I don't think such a list exists, as not every individual "must know" every piece. They should know the pieces that they need to improve their individual skill and address their individual needs. However, if you're looking for a top 5 "most standard" undergraduate euph pieces, mine would be:

1. Fantasia - Gordon Jacob
2. Lyric Suite - Donald White
3. Concerto - Horowitz
4. Sonata for Unaccompanied Euphonium - Clinard
5. Concerto for Bassoon, K.191 - Mozart

Is it expected that euphonium players learn a tuba concerto, probably a more bass tuba-type piece, at all?

Not really. Not that it doesn't happen. I had a friend in college who played part of the Vaughan Williams concerto on euph, but I don't think it's any more common than tuba players playing euphonium pieces. There are a couple of pieces that both tuba and euph players play, like the six studies in english folk song, or the marcello sonata in F major, but their just different arrangements.

Partially serious, partially sarcastic...

I have never, in my life, met a single euphonium player that doesn't know Barat's Introuction and Dance. I'm sure plenty will step right up to prove me wrong.

No, it isn't the hardest piece; no, it isn't the longest piece; no, it isn't the highest piece; but honestly, who hasn't at least played over this piece?

re: Barat: Very much agree about the "standard" part, not sure I agree about the undergraduate part. I think it's actually more of a standard high school level piece nowawadays than a college piece, but, again, depends on the individual. Also, despite the fact that it's a very common piece, I wouldn't necessarily consider it a "must know" piece personally. In all honesty (prepares to say this for the first time ever in public, gulp...) I don't personally think it's a great piece of music.

I don't think it's a great piece of music either: in fact, IMO, it's pretty banal.

Know OF it, yes; KNOW it, nope.

Never played it in my life: in fact, never even played a phrase of it. Sight-sang it and listened to a few recordings when I was considering it, and decided not to waste my time on something I found musically unsatisfying, so ...

LINE FORMS BEHIIND ME. :tuba:

Easy answer...whatever is on the Falcone/ITEC repertoire lists!

I try to work on a substantial "staple" piece and some newer works every year.

If I HAD to say one...it would be and in-depth study of Horovitz.

Don't listen to any of that FILTH Martin Cochran is spewing about Mr. Barat. My all-Barat album is about to be released and I expect it to take the marketplace by storm and garner several major awards.

Martin already knows about it, so I guess he's just jealous. He tried to break into the recording studio and delete all of the masters. Luckily I already had backups on wax cylinder.
