Solo Suggestions

Post by Kingofspadesx200 »

Hello everyone,

It is about a year before solo and ensemble next year and I want to pick out a solo to practice and I plan to take whatever solo I play to state. This year I'm a sophmore in high school and made a superior on "Introduction and Dance" by Barat. I considered myself a pretty good tuba player and would prefer to play a grade 6. I want something difficult and I want to learn something from it. I'm looking at "Sonata for Tuba and Piano" by Beversdorf and I would like to hear what you guys suggest and any opinions on Sonata for Tuba and Piano.

The Beversdorf is a very modern sounding piece. It was ok, but I didn't really enjoy playing it. The Don Hadad is good, so is the Hartley, and the Capuzzi. If you want to really push yourself, try the Vaughan Williams or the Gregson Concerto. Those are a little more advanced. I took the Vaughan Williams to state solo and ensemble my junior year in high school and made a 1st division so it is do-able. Good luck!

I like the Haddad Suite for Tuba, but you might also want to check out the Marcello Sonata No.1 in F. I'm working on this one now and I find it to be a great piece to play.

The Hindemith don't forget the Hindemith - it's a tremendous piece although the piano part is horrendously difficult.
