Hey,

The plastic insert on my first valve cap for my ybb-103 keeps falling out.

What's the best adhesive to keep it in?

I know how much you repair guys like superglue!

on a valve button, superglue would be a bad idea...heat it up, and it makes toxic fumes...

I'd use contact cement. It's flexible and if the button ever needs to be removed, it could be done with the proper solvent.

Are you really anticipating have serious work done on your valve's button in the future? I say use whatever you have on hand that will keep it in place.

but...the superglue isn't a very great idea...given, I use it for corks on rotor stop plates and key feet of woodwinds, but heating it up will produce toxic fumes...and how would the next tech know there's superglue rather than anything else?

if epoxy or contact cement is used, the heat will help loosen the adhesive so that they could remove the pearl in case that something happens to the pearl or if something happens to the valve button itself


The fumes from heated superglue are toxic.
superglue=cyanoacrylate, cyno=cyanide

While it may be good to err on the safe side... I have no reservations about using SuperGlue (I prefer the gel variety) for bonding parts that I know I'm not going to want to take apart. The cyanide gas that everyone seems to be concerned about is actually produced during the curing process in trace amounts that can be dealt with by having descent ventilation.

I haven't found any evidence that CURED SuperGlue is any more hazardous when heated.

Many other solvents and glues that are commonly used in the shop are equally (or much more) hazardous if proper care is not taken.

SuperGlue has it's place but I certainly would not try to put a bottom bow together using it!

As one that has worked in r&d in the glue industry, trust me when I tell you that super glue would be perfect for this application....plus, as Bob said, what's the chance of ever heating a finger button? Mixing a 2 part epoxy would be overkill. You'd waste as much adhesive as you needed to keep the inlay in place. Contacts are more time and more mess than they're worth in this application. Any other type of adhesive would take longer to cure. The biggest negative on super glue here is that it may pop loose if you drop the button.

1 drop of gel super glue should do the trick......unless it's a material that super glue won't stick to....then all bets are off.
