I was surprised to read on the CSO website, that Mr. Pokorny is on sabbatical... Do you maybe know why, and for how long? I hope he's doing good !
Who is replacing him during this period?

Gene is on a 6-month sabbatical which began in February. He has several projects and appearances within and outside of the Chicago area scheduled through this period of time. For example, he is scheduled to perform the McKimm Concerto with Chicago Brass Band.

The trombone section of CSO has chosen the tubists who will be playing with the orchestra in Gene's absence. All are from major orchestras, mostly (if not completely) American. Someone on this forum will have the complete list and schedule of tubists, but some of the names include Chris Olka, JaTtik Clark, Carol Jantsch, Michael Moore, and Tony Kniffen (sorry for any names that I did not list, but let's leave it to someone who has the official schedule to post the names).

I plan to take advantage of his sabattical when he performs next month as soloist with the Eastern Utah Wind Symphony in Price, UT. I don't know what motivated him to agree to the performance (maybe he has an old friend in Price), but I'm looking forward to it immensely. Still deciding whether my 6-year-old son is ready to sit through a concert with appropriate conduct. (If I use the right "reward" incentive . . .)

Buy another ticket and have someone to take him out if necessary. You never know with kids. My nephews have been really good in these situations. Somehow, they realize that 'something important' is happening and rise to the situation... It wasn't a 'pops concert' and they really liked the music. (They were 5 and 7.)

Skittles and bubble gum worked for our son when he was that age. A typical orchestra concert required two packets of Skittles and a fistful of Double Bubble. I poured the rewards into my pockets and discarded the packaging to prevent noise.

Craig Knox will be performing Prokofiev Symphony no 4 on the weekend of March 26. Big tuba part! Great tuba player!

I'd love to be able to make the trip for that. Prokofiev 4 is a tremendous work, and a hell of a blow!

JaTtik Clark was last week's tubist, on Rachmaninoff Piano #2 and Shostakovich 11. He sounded fantastic!!!
