So I've decided that I want to purchase a 1292 leadpipe to put on my 1291 but miraphone does not sell directly. Any suggestions of who I should get in contact with to order one? Also I am wondering how possible it would be to make the leadpipes interchangeable. Any thoughts?

Here ya go. Only 1 in stock!

They will be as "interchangeable" as you are good with a soldering iron. Good luck!

Models such as the Neptune and some Rudolf Meinl have interchangeable leadpipes which have a sort of slide socket fitting at the valve end and screw attachment to bell using two brackets. Maybe if you have both leadpipes, then a good repair technician could fit up for the two to be made interchangeable in much the same way?

Jonathan "who likes interchangeable leadpipes as much as anything because they make cleaning the pipe easy (just take off and run snake through)"

Sure... it would be a fairly simple matter to add a receiver to the #1 piston stub, tenons to the leadpipes, and a means to fasten the leadpipe to the bell. But... IF you did have interchangeable leadpipes... how could you be sure that any different playing characteristics were due to the leadpipe?.... or the additional parts that were introduced to make the pipes interchangeable?

As Bloke mentioned... there are a lot of other things that can influence how a horn plays. I think the leadpipe issue follows right along with the 'what's the best mouthpiece' question. Maybe Matt Walters can reiterate the value of 'the gap' again.

My personal observation is that I should practice more with what I have rather than to keep 'fiddling' with stuff.

I ordered mine from Dan Oberloh, who ordered it directly from Miraphone.

But, it looks like you can get them from here, ready to ship:

I say call Roger Lewis, see what he says; besides selling the parts, he did the 1292 leadpipe switch on his personal horn too.

I liked my 1291 before making the change, and liked it even more after the change. I talked to Alan Baer before doing the mod, and he told me that nearly all the difference is in the pipe, and to definitely change the pipe.

And, already owning a 1291, spending a few hundred bucks to make it more like a 1292 was much more economical than spending a few thousand more to trade in/upgrade to a 1292.
