It's an annual event where musicians from all over come and play under Colonel Gabriel. The Repasz Band hosts it in Williamsport, PA. Next year it will be the weekend of Oct. 9.

Bel Air Community Band, July 4, 2021. Only 35 people on the truck, and two tubas- Cheryl Wald (German rotary BBb, we think it's a Ziess) and me (20J, a.k.a. The Beast). We hadn't played together since March of last year, but "Americans We" and "Semper Fidelis" sounded like we had. Photo credit- Cheryl:

Tuba Section of the 2021 Maryland All-State Community Band:
IMG_2907small.jpg
From Left: Patrick FitzGerald, principal (Meinl-Weston 5450 "Thor" CC), and me (Alexander). Photo credit- The Lovely Naoko.

The concert was this afternoon, and was the first time most of us had played in any kind of non-virtual ensemble for over a year. Our chops held up, but just barely............

Guest attendance was strictly limited, and we had to wear masks and use bell covers.

The concert went well, and will be posted on YouTuba shortly- I'll link to it in the Media section when ready.

Did Col. Gabriel conduct again? I had to look him up to see if he was still alive. He is 97 and apparently still kicking!

He conducted a high school honor band of mine about 20 years ago and he seemed quite old then. I suppose he was. But I have never been under a better baton--a true formative experience for a dopey high school tubist.
