I'm posting this photo because I thought the picture was pretty cool. One of our bass players took this photo. This is the Oklahoma City Philharmonic during a pops concert last season. From the top down, me (Ted Cox, one of my Alexander tubas) Noel Seals, Irv Wagner, John Allen, Karl Sievers, Jay Wilkinson, and Michael Anderson.

Taken at the Paulding County Fine Arts Festival (11 Oct) with the Dixie Saints, one of the groups that "allows" me to play with them.

A statistical anomaly. The low tubas in the Oregon Tuba Ensemble for a recent concert to help the Eugene Concert Choir celebrate their 40th Anniversary Christmas Concert. From right, Susan Daily, Emily Barron, Ally House and Georgia Rennie. First time I can recall that the entire low tuba section was women. Horns are a YBB 301, a St. Pete, a VMI 201 and an Eastman.

Hi Klauss,

I don't know the exact model number etc, but it's an Adams euphonium - from memory the body is the medium weight lacquered brass with a silver bell. It has an Adams adjustable gap receiver.

It sounds very good in the orchestra, but I admit I have a soft spot for the original Hirsbrunner ones with the lever on the tuning slide. I know they might not be every euphonium players' favourite, but I think they make a great tenor tuba sound in an orchestral context.

Your Alex BBb is just a very old version of the 163. Alexander has one just like it sitting in their factory. I can't see detail on the shields that are on the bell but I'm guessing pre WW1.

Thanks- if that's true, the bore on these horns was increased at some point in time. The 163's bore has been 20.5 mm/0.807" for years, while this one is just under 20 mm/0.787" as measured at Baltimore Brass. The valve circuit tubing on this tuba is noticeably smaller too, though I don't have measurements on it. But here is a shot of the shield, which at least shows the name:
Interestingly enough, Gebruder Alexander's site lists the 163's bore as 21.5 mm/0.846", which is the same as that of the 164. Not sure if that's a glitch or not:

That makes sense, Frank's Alex sounds like a 163 and blends with the two 163s in the section very well. The shield looks like an Alexander shield that I saw on an Alex made around 1900. Whatever model Frank's Alex is and whenever it was made, it sounds very good in our section. Also, the intonation in our section is excellent with the three Alexanders.

That's some serious firepower! Might I ask what the other horns are?

Gee, Mark. Everyone on Tubenut knows that no one can play Alexanders in tune, especially when there are BBb's and CC's in the same section.

Not totally sure of the models, but Don has his signature Mirafone CC, Tim with a Gnagey CC, Gil with a Miraphone CC, Willy with a Rudi CC, T.J. with a Nirsch CC, and Yours Truly with a Chicago Holton 6/4 Raincatcher. (the token BBb)

Here is a neat photo from a concert last fall with the Minnetonka Concert Band (Minnesota). I used the cimbasso on a couple of select numbers where it was appropriate.
