Hi all--

I'm doing a graduate degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and play in a brass band quartet there as well. This quartet is comprised of a cornet player from Cornwall (male), a cornet player from Wales (female), a tenor horn (what Americans call alto horn) player from Wales (female), and myself being from America on euphonium (and obviously female). We currently have the name "Bravito" for our group, but seeing as that was the old name and half of the personnel have changed, we would like a different name.

We wanted something a little more sophisticated, seeing as all we've been able to come up with so far have just been inappropriately amusing. We also wanted something in Welsh, but you really need something in English first...hmmm. Any ideas? Thanks!!

you could legitamately keep your name, as far as I know the only ensemble that kept all its players and disbanded when they retired or died was the Amadeus string quartet. The Black Dyke band is still the Black Dyke band even though the conductor, players and instruments have changed over time.
As for a new name for an ensemble, names can be good or original seldom both, you could name yourself after your college, one of your teachers (they would love that), your favourite composer, your cat, anything you want, anagrams of your names and so on. A welsh name would be interesting, you could all be really insulting to the English and they wouldn't know...

Welsh, you say? How about, "Brass Dragon" or "Dragon Brass Quartet" (That would get you to DBQ, which would be a great phoneme to BBQ)?

OTOH, the name "Leek-y Brass" would just have the wrong connotation, as would "Daffy Brass" about the players.

Sorry, just couldn't resist those last two.

Hmmm...one lead guy, three gals, lesssee..... any chance his name is Charlie? And you're named Kelly, Jill, and Sabrina?

What about something related to the Cornophone? The image could be worked into a great logo, even though I don't think there is any direct relationship between Cornwall and Cornophone... more here.
