Poor gal. Those Schmid's are fine horns------very expensive. The thief must have known something about the value. I hope the horn is recovered.

Bloke, I remember hearing of a reputable professional player (not horn), who for YEARS had been walking into instrument stores to "try out" a few models, and leaving with one more instrument than he walked in with. Then sold them to students or colleagues, all of whom assumed he had come across them through his contacts. Hard to fathom that people in our business could steal from their fellow musicians, but it happens.

Old TubeNet had a member selling his schools low brasses. His stunt was blown and he was kind of quarantined. When he after some time tried to sell instruments via TN again, the welcoming wasn’t all that enthusiastic.

Engelbert Schmid makes some quite distinctive models. If the type of horn was told of, it might be easier to track by eye.

Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of stolen instruments are stolen from cars...I think there might be a moral to the story...

Ditto to what bloke said. Both of my normal concert halls are in the affluent suburbs and I wouldn't think of leaving my axe unattended, or in the car in plain sight. We just recently had a smash and grab purse theft in the church parking lot during services. Last year we showed up for services Sunday morning to find all the mics gone from the choir loft. This is not Memphus. People move to this area to enjoy our low crime rate. I can't imagine leaving a $40,000 bass unattended anywhere.

Rauch horns are even harder to get than Schmids, and one for sale should stand out.

My suspicion is that the owner was known to the thief, to the point where the thief knew the horn was in the car. The really rotten part of all this is that you have to suspect all your friends and acquaintences. Foo.

Having been the victim of a home break in, I can see areas where we all need to tighten up security. The world just isn't a nice place some days, and there may be more eyes watching you than you realize.

I was just telling a student over the weekend about the concept of not letting your horn out of your sight. Young kid, and this was a sax player, but I have rolled the tuba into a bathroom too many times. and like Bloke, passed the Walgreens or whatever and I just say to myself "security". I don't think we can be too careful.
