Has anyone ever played the tuba in Antarctica? I'm trying to decide if I should pack the YBB-621S.

and...is the Weril/Nirschl production facility in Buenos Aires? I'll have 24 hours free there - and what could be
more interesting than visiting a tuba factory?

I must have missed something not being on this forum too much any more. Antarctica? Vacation? Science?

I also have to say (and please forgive me) that the old joke about a brass toilet seat in the Klondike came to mind.

I haven't looked into cryo treatment myself, but I bet it typically takes a lower temperature than you could count on there. Whether that would actually make any difference depends on you, I suppose.

Where are you headed in Antarctica??? I spent a good bit of time there last December and January and had what was (by an enormous margin) the best experience of my life! I didn't bring my tuba but I did have an especially good stay at Vernadsky Research Base with some Ukrainians with a taste for Balkan brass music.

Tourist cruise. My former dean is a Marine Biologist and has a research station there - but this is a cruise where he's the ScienceGuy. We fly from Buenos Aires to the tip of South America ("Ushuaia - the Southernmost city in the world...") and then cruise to and along the coast of Antarctica - with twice daily shore excursions. I don't think we get a chance to sleep on the ice... From the map, it looks like we go around Elephant Island and go ashore in the South Shetlands and Deception Island.

Ushuaia is a fun place in its own right and well worth exploring should you have any extra time there (a hamburger and caipirinha at my favorite haunt, Tante Sara is also well worth exploring!) Deception Island is amazingly beautiful, but not in the typical "postcard" sense of many other landscapes you will see. I am jealous that you are going to Elephant Island, one of the more historically significant Antarctic sites - when I get back there, its on my to-do list. Enjoy every minute and make sure to take in every experience!

Assuming for a moment that a cruise ship will have more creature comforts than, say, Shakleton's camp, I say pack that tuba with you!

I disagree vehemently. You'll be way too busy seeing things that you can't see anywhere else on Earth to worry about keeping your chops up.
