Some Reasons, besides the obvious, to love Gene Pokorny

Post by Chuck Jackson »

OK, so the MAN is coming to Sin City to give a tuba recital on Saturday. Lest anyone get to "uppity" about our particular instrument, I want to share three qoutes from today's local rag that make me love this guy and his down-to-earth perspective on the tuba. Park your ire at the door folks and take these for what they are, good clean fun:

" Pokorny said "I just want to try to give the illusion that the tuba is a musical instrument"

"When you look at the audience at a tuba recital and you say you"ve talked to everybody in the audience, that means you talked to both of them" Pokorny joked.

"When you come to a tuba recital, you have to admit it's a conscious decision. It's not like you wake up from a daze and all of the sudden you're in an incredible place and here's a guy honking a big moose caller at you."

Of course it would be a wonderful experience to hear one of the true giants of the music world, but I am busy. I'm glad he has a sense of humor. The most priceless reason for playing the tuba by the man himself:

"I didn't like sitting with all the other junior high clarinet players. So, I figured it was just as easy to sit in the back and kind of be my own person and be closer to the door.. When the snack period bell hit, I'd be the first out the door. It seemed like a win-win for everybody."

Food indeed!!! You can get the full picture (actually the picture in the paper is GREAT) at reviewjournal.com.

A good Pokorny quote from a radio broadcast (sometime last year, I think?): "Tubists don't have delusions of grandeur. Tubists have delusions of adequacy"

I still chuckle over his answering machine message after the Chernobyl meltdown...speaking of over 2 decades ago...

"You are invited to large Soviet-style barbecue near Kiev. Bring your own hot dogs and plutonium shields".

That sounds like the kind of thing a Warlock would say. . . (Capriol, anyone?)
