Painting a sousaphone gold or silver?

I'm looking for a fiberglass sousaphone, and when I get it I'm going to paint it gold or silver. I need it to not look plastic for some gigs I do. I'm thinking it could come out really cheesy with the wrong paint. Anybody do this successfully? And, if so, how and what did you use?

Take it to a good body shop, and look through the custom color books to find the exact color you're desiring. Being your looking for a good quality job, have it done professionally. Granted we can all paint with the rattle can, and Goodgigs gave excellent instruction. Gold and Silver metallic flake are not as easy as the classic whites. I had a 36K painted with a two tone metallic Black Cherry, (the bell was an old silver bell with fairly good plating left inside the bell, both were finished with a clear candy coat finish, via a local small town body shop. He had also painted my motorcycle the same way. Fairly inexpensive and a great job, No runs, no drools, no errors. I'll post a link of some pic's for you.
