Hi all,

I'm looking into these tubas, and was wondering if there are any recordings for reference of a Cerveny "Piggy"? Solo or in a group...anything as an example. Thanks.

Big sound in a small package. not a York, not an Alex, but rich, smooth, and broad. Test it before you buy it, for pitch and response. A good one is a treasure, a bad one is miserable.

A couple months ago I heard concert by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and the tubist appeared to be playing a Cerveny Piggy, so maybe check out that orchestra's recent recordings.

BTW I was amazed as have never seen such a small tuba played in an orchestra for Shostakovich!

The 1st Center City Brass Quintet album - "Center City Brass". Craig Knox told me he used his well worn piggy on that with the group recorded in a cathedral sanctuary just with an ambient mic. Out of frustration of the intonation quirks, he's gone through various other horns, but I think the pig sounds perfect on the album.

Maybe I'm opening a can of worms here (one that is OFTEN opened up in this forum) but I don't think that "nice playing" = "the horn". The nice playing comes from work and work and work, and studying, and practicing...etc. Now, maybe "nice sound" = "the horn", but since mouthpieces and individuality of player have such an effect on the sound of the player, I would be hesitant to even make that connection. I don't "want" any horn in particular that I haven't played. Even if I have played that particular model, it doesn't mean it's the horn for me because you need to try our individuals as well.

Here is a very good representation of the sound of a "piggy" in a brass quintet. This is a very fine piece by noted composer David Dzubay (also a fine trumept player).

I'm pretty sure that this is a Cerveny piggy in the quintet.

Is that Dave Taylor playing tuba? I thought he had a Besson Eb or some such thing....
The page confuses me.

The Manhattan Brass have it in their repertoire and have recorded it, but I believe the recording on David Dzubay's site is from the orginal taping after the world premier with the Indiana Chamber Brass.

I made my own conclusions for the sake of hijacking the thread. I'm sure that isn't exactly what you meant, but I LOVE taking things out of context (or using the correct context, whatever the case!)

Listen to Donald Thornton playing with the Klezmorim or with Brassworks.
He told me that he used a Piggy - probably on the later recordings...maybe the live Klezmorim CD and Variety Stomp....great player.

Most of his playing with The Klezmorim Donald used a small Monke BBb 4 rotor - I have that horn now! (and it is for sale too. haven't posted it to the sale list yet.) It may be a Piggy Stencil, but I have no facts to back that up.
I found this post while searching on the word Klezmorim because of this link I saw on Facebook (posted by Johnathan Dorn.) Some amazing playing! Not a Piggy.

I have heard Craig play his piggy many times - he was at BU when I was there and he Lived in the practice room. He played with ccbq when I lived in Cleveland and I was totally blown away. Craig kills on his pig, but all that means is that the horn isn't an impediment in highly capable hands. The player is the biggest variable.
