Best way to transport a music stand?

I regularly have to bring a stand with me to rehearsals. Nothing fancy, just the cheap-o $15 metal one (but the same one I've had for 20+ years). I live in the city, so I walk/subway everywhere.
If my horn was a beater, I'd just throw it in the bell and carry-on in my gig bag. Is there anything like a padded "stand bag" or something so I could still put the stand in my bell, but not have to worry about metal-on-metal?
This might be totally obvious, so sorry if I overlooked something easy...

Wrap it in a beach towel!

Yup, that way you have a rag and don't have to dirty the floors when you empty your water key, as well.

Make sure to play only in rooms with wooden walls. Bring a few darts. Who looks at the conductor anyway?

A padded bag suitable for your existing wire stand should be easy enough to make from scratch.
Once we start to talk about buying a new stand, I'll continue to put my support behind
the Manhasset Voyager, in its briefcase sized bag (it has a full-sized, solid "desk").
This won't fit in your bell, or in the side pocket of a gig bag - but its rock solid once
you get there, and the bag can carry a lot of other stuff
(music, mouthpiece, water bottle, valve oil, etc.) Almost by definition, anything
that will end up ON your stand at the gig will fit inside the bag.
My wife is a flute player - we've gone through a lot of stands. The ones that live in the backs of
our cars are both Voyagers. All the others (esp. the ones bought to be a good match for the
amount of stuff toted by a flute player) sit in the corner for "emergency use only".
[She could probably fit most of her flute/picc stuff in the Voyager bag, if it weren't for the
way cool gig bag I bought her 8 years ago. Actually, with a little big of pushing and pulling,
it might be possible to fit the flute/picc gig bag inside the Voyager bag. For me, I typically
carry a Cronkhite gig bag that holds everything EXCEPT the Voyager. That goes on my back - the
Voyager bag hangs from my hand, or from one shoulder. The Baltimore Brass tuba rest goes
inside the bell (in it's own padded bag) - but I refuse to downsize the stand. It's just *so*
nice and solid, once you get there.]

Well, to further hijack this posting, I'd have to say I heartily recommend a much-more-expensive-than-I-would-have-liked stand that I ultimately bought: the DESCA stand. It closes up into a box 4"x4"x23" and uses the same leg-stand as does my Baltimore Brass support stand-they supply it to David. Built like a tank, weighs about 5 pounds.I would not carry it in the bell, but I carry a cloth satchel-type bag for the stand, light, pencils, etc.
http://www.descahome.com" target="_blank" target="_blank This has a solid desk with a 4x4 shelf under it, has the flat-to-the-ground legs of the BB stand that you can rest your foot on in windy conditions, yet you won't trip on it like the K&M stands. Worth the little extra weight over and above the Voyager, IMHO.

Perhaps you meant:
http://www.descahome.com
But...I couldn't figure out how to buy one. Or even, how much it might cost.
Quite clever, though - the stand is it's own box!

Thanks, Sloan, I was just going back to edit the address! Yes, that is the correct one.You need to click the "contact desca" button for information [or call them in Wisconsin]. They are more costly than most of the other alternatives, but in my estimation, flat out worth the difference.

Like $50 costly, or $100 costly? More?

I have to agree. I've had a Manhasset Voyager for awhile and it's a great stand!

Sorry, I forgot to define "costly". I paid $98. for it 3-4 years ago, but did not need the carrying case. They are developing a new design--should be interesting if they get it to market.

One of the folding stands with the (included) case-like device is a good idea, but I go one step further and actually put one of those (folding stand and case) in a stick bag:
http://www.wwbw.com/Search/Default.aspx ... %20bag&o=1" target="_blank" target="_blank
...and then put it in my bell. The stick bag keeps the stand snug and keeps it from scratching the inside of the bell.

My gig bag has a large enough pocket for a folding stand. I use the one step up from the real flimsy one. it has tube legs and fully adjustable legs and height.

I'm still stuck on the Manhasset 'Voyager'. Sure... the desk is big and bulky. But... the tripod has a wide stance for stability... and the bag is large enough to also carry a mouthpiece pouch, a music folder, a DEG tuba stand, AND a Lampcraft stand light.

Some people go for the right look....others are more concerned with function.

Didn't know that, but not surprising in that Desca makes the same leg component for his BB tuba stand.Same price as through the manufacturer.
