Hi Folks,

I am playing the James Woodward Concerto with the Japan Self Defense Band next month. June 5th/Tokyo Electron Hall,Sendai(for any of you who want to fly over : )
Anyhow, they have asked me to do/recommend a duet as well with one of the bands tubist as an encore. I have a couple ideas but thought I'd throw this up here as well and get some other input from you folks.
If it helps, also on the program is a band transcription of Scheherazade! Any and all recommendations welcome as well as a source point. Would need this relatively quick I guess.

I just got through playing a tuba duet with a buddy of mine, Wes Pendergrass, on my senior recital back on the 27th of April. It's a piece by Kenyon Wilson called Tubaku. It's pretty fun and not extremely boring. It's got some tricky spots in the piece where the parts sometimes don't line up with each other. I'd try it out if you can get a copy of it.

Have you looked into the Jim Self Concert duets? He wrote a duet every year as a Christmas present to his friends, and then collected them and published them at a later date. They're all transcriptions of Baroque/Classical era tunes, and 1 is is own creation in the Rococo style. Nicely done, both parts equal in challenge and importance. The range is very accessible on CC tuba or F tuba, as well.

Another option is the Ken Singleton duets, but they are nowhere near as challenging or impressive. In a pinch though, they're well transcribed, and not technically demanding.

Some great recommendations above, but with the band setting of the concert have you considered something like Jim Self's Sousa Phone Home? It has many Sousa references the band personnel and audiences will recognize immediately, not to mention the fresh take Self gives it with the added drum set part and an added element of funkiness to the old standards. It never fails to bring a smile to audiences especially when they can get the joke.

I would love to hear a recording of you doing the Woodward Concerto with the band though...

How about the fourth mvmt from Kerry Turner's duets? Good show off piece that's not too difficult and is audience friendly.
