I have been searching for some time now for an alternative to my Besson EEb 982 that I use for solo/quintet and some orchestral material. I also use a Meinl Weston CC 2000. I have just recieved a new Petrushka f tuba from Miraphone and have to report it to be one of the best instruments I have ever played. I realise everyone has different ideas about f tubas but this instrument really should be tried by everyone. It's trully amazing
Intonation is right on the money across the range and the bottom register is unbelievable. I dont mean unbelievable for an f tuba , I simply mean UNBELIEVABLE!!
The top register sings like a bird and the vented valves are amazing. Quiet, slick and smooth. I can create as big a sound (maybe bigger) than my EEb but can touch a note with the softest articulation and it just works.
Miraphone really have developed an outstanding instrument and as a UK based player it really works as an alternative to our EEb tradition.

I should have said that I am an endorsee/clinician for besson. I love the EEb but was looking for a different sound for some things. I work with the Scottish chamber orchestra as well as many other orchestras in the UK but I also do many solo/quintet gigs. Hope this helps.

I really like them too, but they seem to really be a short person's tuba (leadpipe hits me in the neck!).

I'm about 6'1" and had ZERO problem with the ergonomics of the horn...

Aren't most tubas too short for you?

Actually no. Some have an uncomfortable valve angle (the Petrouchka was fine in that regard but many makers of rotary tubas seem to be focused on making the paddles perpendicular to the vertical line of the horn) but most aren't that bad at all. I play my little 30ish" tall King Eb every day with no problems there, though admittedly the "repaired" receiver isn't at the best angle for me. It's not like I'm 9 feet tall or anything...
