Yes you are, i'd use a contrabass, and pretty straightforward.

Yes. I agree with contrabass. There is a section where you will need to play very softly. Otherwise, there are not any great challenges.

I've seen it done with a 3/ size Miraphone. The guy, a pro, was also covering the double bass parts. It aws a community orchestra of about 40 players but he did a nice job.

As the old (pre end of WWI) Bohemian band pitch was very close to A=466Hz, that helicon is in F# by modern standards. As with all tubas reading concert bass clef, fingerings are just a matter of brain adjustment.
