Since Julius Fucik died in 1916; I'm assuming his marches are now public domain. But, I can't find the tuba parts for them anywhere. Yes, I checked http://www.bandmusicpdf.org/ and none of them are there.

Does anyone know where I can get these parts (e.g. Thunder and Blazes).

Made a googling in German. Nothing relevant came up. Very soon the entries omitted the i in the composers name, and then we are out of German.

Have you seen the IMSLP (International Music Score Library Project) web site, also known as the Petrucci music library? It's a free web site where thousands of PDF scans of public domain pieces are posted. I did see some Fucik pieces there, you could search by composer or genre (band). They may be down till Monday because of maintenance work, but check it out. It is also a great source for orchestra scores and parts. Hope this is helpful, John

Likewise. We play it all the time in Shrine band. I can almost play it from memory. When I'm having a good night, sometimes I'll play the dogfight in the same octave as the euphs, just to ruffle their feathers.

We have the Harold L. Walters arrangement. BTW -- also look for it under the title "Entry of the Gladiators."

This may be THE single greatest website for musicians out there. MOST of my repertoire for both my school orchestra and the Youth orchestra for next season was available FOR FREE (yes, parts AND scores). A wonderful way to get aquainted with some new music and save a BUNDLE on standard PD literature.

If one aspires to win a job in a service band, having that dogfight section dead-to-rights is a must.

Entrance of the Gladiators or "Thunder and Blazes" appears in the Carl Fischer march book "Pass In Review" - whcih is th edition most American bandsmen know. The march has been published by several different publishers both in the UK and on the continent - and in different keys.

"Florentiner" is Fucik's next most famous march - the euro edition was published for a time by Kalmus in the USA. You have to change around some parts, and discard others (like the bass trumpet parts), but it plays well.

The Basses (Tubas) "Pass In Review" Book is probably a good investment for someone who aspires to play in a service band, or any traditional band - I'm pretty sure it's still in every service band library. There are some other marches in there worth getting to know, although the Chicago Tribune "edition" is unrecognizable from Chambers' original version published by R.F. Seitz.

Merle Evans used the same edition of "Gladiators" found in the Pass In Review. And he called "Pere de la Victoire" "Perry De la Victory"!! Same book...

You can purchase it off the Fischer website I'm sure.

Thanks for pointing that out. I have a rather large collection of march folios and a near complete set of "Pass in Review". I never noticed that those publications contained "Thunder and Blazes".

As I get it ‘bombardon’ is an old Italian term for bass tuba. When my Gymnasium (high school) was visited by a British boarding school 50 years ago, the guy coming to my home played bombardon in the school band (which did not take part in the tour). That was the first time I heard the term spoken. I likely had seen it on old style band parts before that.

The set of parts linked to certainly gives a good idea about this march, which strikes me by getting so popular despite the extensive use of chromatics.

But this set is not complete as the 2nd clarinet and the 2nd baritone parts are missing. The latter maybe may be reconstructed from looking at the horn parts and finding the missing harmony notes in the bassoon parts. The Solo Eb Saxhorn and the 1st Baritone parts are each given twice, which is not really helpful though. The piccolo and flute part is nominally for instruments in Eb, which is odd. It also is wrong as the part really is for instruments in Db.

One may wonder which type of band played from this set. The distribution of parts is quite similar to the LOC sets of parts for Sousa marches from around 1890.

At the time this was originally posted... bandmusicpdf.org was in it's infancy. I see that there are now two arrangements of "Thunder & Blazes" available for download. The Laurendeau arrangement even has modern flute and F horn parts.
