My Dvorak 9 Errata

Hello all,
I've received numerous requests for my changes to Robert Ryker's alternative Dvorak 9 part. My scanner is down, but here is an "errata" i just typed up for someone:

Hi Scott, meant to do this a while back on tubenet...been really busy & my scanner is currently down. Tell ya what...if you have the Ryker part, here are my "tacets" & omissions...there were a few extra measuers in that part...probably just simple finale/sibelius mistakes. I can usually play quite powerfully in this particular orchestra, but I definitely chilled out on this...I felt fortunate to have the opportunity to play this part, and I didn't want to piss anyone off (especially the conductor!). My colleagues really enjoyed the extra support! Here we go:

ms.21 is with horns...prepare to feel a little naked and link w/horns for time!

ms. 40-46 Tacet...was back & forth on this, but preferred tactet so 1 has greater effect.

ms. 111-114 Tacet

ms. 121 (4) mf with gentle, "pillow" sound

29th bar of 5 does not exist (g & f#)...extra measure (copy error).

We did not take repeat.

ms. 336-339 Tacet

ms. 346 again, mf "pillow"

ms. 416-423 only play half notes with tbones, (tacet 417, 419, 421, 423).

ms. 435-436 do not exist...copy error, but I will continue calling measure numbers as they are printed...i definitely suggest you remeasure it for rehearsals.

while playing ms. 445-449, you will feel quite naked, just to warn you!! (same in opening lick).

Last movement:

ms. 23 i like this A down octave

ms. 58 does not exit (copy error)

ms. 115-118 Tacet

ms. 276 (11) soli w/basses...mf cresc up to Bb, decresc down.

ms. 278 mp on E so can make huge cresc in next measure to the B.

ms. 300 (12) down octave until the F at 305, then big cresc to the E.

Have fun!! Jobey

ps...especially for young players who like to play too loud, ALOT...please remember that blending beautifully, being more "felt than heard" is a great approach for this part. I always played as tastefully & beautiful throughout so I would not be asked to "lay out" on anything I really wanted to play!!! BTW, all tacets were my own choices after playing everything in the first rehearsal...actually got a funny, appreciative, smile from the conductor at the second rehearsal at a couple spots where I chose to tacet or back off...kinda laid into some of them in the first rehearsal

Jobey, I am going to have a go at this alternative part and wonder did you play this on your CC BAT, or pull out something smaller? I rather think of using my F tuba in all but the Largo to blend better.

haaaa....i was curious why I just got a couple emails about the part. Funny, I'm performing New World with 2 orchestras next week...one's letting me use it, the other butthole only wants the 14 notes. I'm going to email it to someone now that's going to try to post it for everyone...it does not have my edits, but feel free to check the errata above. One thing...someone mentioned a while back that the triplet at the end of the opening figure should be 32nds...the horns, celli & bassi that play the full figure have the triplet, tbones & everyone else have 32nds...so, i suggest play the triplet if playing the full figure, or play 32nd's if not playing the arpeggio (unison w/tbones).

I play it on my PCK...I think bass tuba might work nicely...I'm too lazy to take 2 horns if I don't need to. :D

Having just played through the part with CD, this bar (the g and f#) does exist, but should be within the 1st time bar. Of course if you played without repeat, you would not know that.

Very useful errata. I've finally (after a month) got around to rewriting this and I'll include the changes. Anyone else got any for me?

I should be able to post the pdf on here within the week.

I got to play this with orchestra last Sunday and think it worked well. Even had the 1st horn come over to say how he enjoyed the 'enhanced' tuba part.

Ryker has done a good job in that it 'sounds like' original Dvorak writing - much in line with the tuba parts in other Dvorak symphonies.

It was great to see the look on the trombone's faces when I came in with the cellos at one point :P

One quick question to those in the know...

Bars 19-22: What length should the notes be? Bars 18 and 19 don't add up as written and, if I include the errata pointed out on the other thread, bar 21 then doesn't add up! Also, bar 22, what value should these have?

Many thanks.

Bars 19-22 should be exactly like the bass as below (although obvious down octave)

Excellent, thank you very much. I am not far off done now, I may even have it ready in a few hours!

Obviously, once I've published it, if anyone spots anything wrong, I'll be happy to change it so that we can have a definitive version...

Thanks Neptune!

Any comments, mistakes or death threats you may have, please get in touch!

I don't view this as a completely finished article as I "bashed it out" in a few hours this afternoon so there are bound hto be issues!

Edited to add: I also had to make a couple of gut calls on whether I agreed with the some of the errata that have been pointed out on various threads. Using the original score as my guide I've upheld most of them but I disagreed with a couple as well. If you don't like it, sorry...
