I have a bunch of their CDs and DVDs - they have often toured to the SF Bay Area but seem to always be here at a time when I am out of the area...
Very interesting time-period for music in Germany they are digging in!

This is a very entertaining group. The ensemble is tight, especially in up-tempo material. I love the sousaphone in these arrangements. The lovely violinist is a pleasure to watch and hear. They were in Oakland a few months ago, but I missed their concert. Next time.

This is an amazing ensemble, with a rather eclectic selection of instruments. You do not need to have a conventional ensemble to make fine music.

The singer sounds like Tom Lehrer.

I have used the sousa on a stand with the bell and leadpipe adjusted so I can do a quick change from string bass. Works well.

Not too surprising, as both represent metropolitan educated traditions rather than more rural ones. “Cabaret” very much touches upon the situation around this old Berlin music tradition, which sometime rulers in Germany considered decadent.

IThe instrumentation is actually very normal... for it's time. I play in an almost identically scored ensemble with 150+ original tunes from the 20s-30s. I wish we would get a fiddle player, though... The leader skips it - but Palast Orchester proves there's something to be gained
J.c.S. (who thinks Max Raabe is hysterical!)

I find the whole style of this well executed, but hysterical. Yet the Palast Orchester is perfectly in a period German style. What they may lack is something Joel Grey had: distance.

Not sure if the vinyl I have ever made it to commercial CD,
but I always admired that band.
Retro Snorlax.
Some other interesting bands currently playing in the same sort of style (more or less) -
I recently posted over on another part of the forum.

Great band... Our Cleveland band is named in their honor... (Night Owls).

There are a lot of free Coon-Sanders tracks
here (plus a short history.)

David,
I used to listen a lot to the Red Hot Jazz Archive, but now I can't get any sound or playback from that site. There are probably a multitude of possible causes. Got any ideas as to solutions? (I get sound and playback from other sites.)

They use Real Audio Player with a 3.0 codec installed (not in the basic free RealAudio package, but it is free and should download automatically. Works on my Mac OS 10.5 just fine.)
I often use SoundConverter to change music files to mp3 but that won't work with .ram files.
