While zooming around Teh Internets I keep on seeing ads for a King 2360 Sousaphone - offered by many different vendors. If I go to the King website it clearly states that the instrument is a hybrid ( white pebble fiberglass body, brass bell with clear lacquer finish ) but every photo of it shows a solid brass (or brass colored ) horn. (the ad linked above even says silver plate! )

Is this just lazy Internet marketing or a deliberate error?

Anybody ever actually play one?

According to the Conn-Selmer parts lists.... the model 2370 is fiberglass. The rest of the King/Conn sousas are either lacquered brass or silver plated.

Of particular interest is that there are no more REAL Conn sousas except for the 20K. The rest of Conn's line has been migrated (adulterated) into King production. For example... if you need parts for your 14K... your tech is likely to receive King parts... which obviously won't fit your old Conn.

There aren't any pictures on the Conn-Selmer web pages that are available to repairmen, either. Luckily, I haven't had any of the new Conn/King sousaphones in the shop. The C-S parts system is really goofy.

Sounds like this is to compete with the Jupiter, which has had a hybrid for years.

Don't know if it's competition or not. Take a look at the Conn 112H double rotor trombone and then take a look at the Jupiter 740L double rotor trombone. They look the same to me.

In April a high school I visited had these. At first I thought they were jupiters but then I saw the King style "S" brace that connects the large bow near the collar to the shoulder area. And sure enough I found the engraving and they were Kings.

For an extra Buck Fifty Seven, they could have changed the color of the plastic to that fake metallic brass that some old horns had, instead of white - might actually look kinda OK!

Right now it just looks sort of like a mistake...

One might assume they had gone goodgigs. At least in their own photo they have achieved somewhat of a stealth effect.
