Chamber music for low brass section?

Hi

Our section at the college is looking for some chamber music to play the upcoming semester. What is out there for 3 trombones and tuba? It doesn't matter if it's three tenors or two tenors and a bass trombone, but it would preferably not be extremely demanding and time consuming as we want to focus on playing excerpts.

What can you recommend?

Is that the "To be or not to be"-piece? If it is, wouldn't you rather call that a solo work for bassbone/tuba?

Yes, the piece does feature the bassbone or tuba, but I would still classify it as chamber music.

Dubensky: Concerto Grosso
Reynolds: Skirmish and Dance

any number of motets and chansons can be arranged as well

If you are up for a challenge, Pierre Beaudry's arrangment of the Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor...

Reichenbach did a beautiful arrangement of Scarborough Fair for 4 trombones... but the 4th part fits very comfortably for tuba.

Assuming the bass trombonist has a good low range, then almost any tuba-euphonium quartet will work. If the tubist has a good high range, then almost any trombone quartet will work.

Enrique Crespo: Bruckner Etüde für das tiefe Blech

I think there are multiple versions, I've played the version for 6 trombones or 6 tubas. There is also a quartet version.

Beautiful piece!

Psalm by Crawford Gates is a really interesting piece written for a Strauss-esque low brass section. It is composed for three bones, euphonium, and tuba. Dee Stewart at IU was the person for whom the piece was composed and there is a very nice recording that he did with the IU bone faculty and Mr. P. It's on D+.. I think. I performed it here at UA last year and it went pretty okay on limited rehearsal. Check it out!

The "New Trombone Collective" has recorded this on their "Collective" CD. Alas, I can find no audio clips on the site that used to exist.

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I know that there is a lot of material if you start looking at trombone or tuba quartets, but I think we would prefer to play something that is written for the instruments we play on. I have played the bassbone part in trombone quartets several times, but it doesn't really work that well in my opinion.

Contact Joe Kreines. He has arranged some stuff for the CSO low brass section.
