I have a couple of older horns, that are raw brass, and the horns and the cases smell terrible, with that old raw brass smell.

My question: Is there any way to get rid of the smell from the horns AND/OR the cases?

I have several raw brass horns. My horns don't have a distinctive smell. I've never been able to put my finger on it. But... most horns will develop a bad smell if left in the case long enough. It doesn't seem to matter if they are raw, lacquered, or silver-plated brass. They all get 'stinky' if left in a closed case long enough. I think it's more of a matter of moisture being trapped inside the case that causes mildew and mold. Being in the repair business... I've thrown away lots of 'stinky' cases.

Buy a big bag of baking soda (pool sized, from sam's club or the hardware store). Put it in a cheap shaker or make one with and old jar and completely coat the entire inside of the case with the stuff. Leave it there for a quite a while (at least overnight) and then vacuum it out with a shop vacuum. They also make a lightly scented arm and hammer carpet and upholstery powder that works great.

The horn itself is a little harder. "Horolene" is used specifically to remove this smell (and tarnish in high concentrations), but if you aren't careful it will turn the horn brown and make it look like copper. Follow the instructions EXTREMELY closely.
