Hi all!

Is the silent brass system a one size fits all system? Will it work for a MW6450? Are there various sizes? Thanks!

The mute is one size fits most. The mute is about a 13 inches in diameter. It sits on top of the bell and is secured with adjustable straps.

The Yamaha Silent Brass will work on large tubas. I've used it on my York monster Eb (20 inch bell), Willson 3050RZ CC (19.6 inch bell), and Yamaha YFB 822S Custom (17.5 inch bell). The mute's plastic, internal, telescoping guide probably will not make contact with the bell and may rattle. I applied some cork furniture pads to keep down the rattling. The three adjustable, elastic, strap-on clips will secure the mute to the bell, even without contact from the internal guide.

The assembled horn and mute will be quite top-heavy, so I recommend having an upright tuba stand for when you need to rest. Set up the practice area carefully if using the electronics. I've used the Yamaha electronics when working on fast passages, using Slow Gold on my computer. There will be lots of wires and patch cords to contend with. You want to be near all of your controls without moving around much. Many people practice without the electronics.

Sorry to hijack this but here it goes anyway... Does the Silent Brass for tuba really reduces the volume enough to allow practicing in the evenings while the little one is asleep?

Yes, the SB is very quiet. In fact, I removed the mic from mine, opening up about a 1/4" hole to make it slightly louder and reduce backpressure. Honestly, I think all that electronics is a gimmick and waste of time. My 2155R was a big horn, in the neighborhood of a modern day Thor, and there was not even remotely a size issue, so the slightly bigger 6450 should be fine. I believe it will even fit a YamaYork.

In my opinion the Silent Brass system is not worth the money.

For a similar price a very nice gentleman can make you the most silent free blowing mute you can possibly imagine.

Schlipf mutes are incredible. I can not recommend them enough.

(not me in the video, but a pretty good representation of how amazing these things are. I can play as loud as I can and not even wake the squirrels sleeping on my deck.
