some serious tuba tone...

I will start this thread with a link to a classic filmscore with some classic good tuba sound!! Tommy Johnson on a Mirafone 190 CC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-lw5eyg ... re=related

I remember hearing this while watching the movie "E.T." as a tuba student 15 years ago.
There are some great tuba parts throughout the movie; especially the bike scene near the end. It is what I consider a perfect tuba sound for film/TV: very deep, round, compact, centered, clear, rich and full. What a sound! :!: :!: :!:

Post your favorite serious tuba sound links and clips. :tuba:

I believe that's Tommy Johnson on a Miraphone 190 CC, but i'm not 100% positive on that. it is some EPIC playing regardless.

Here's one of my favs...

Some stupendous tuba playing here, and if you listen real close, you can pick out the bass trombone...

Sounds like something my brother, the music composition professor and apparently well received modern composer and whose music I could never stand, would say.

Nice find!

But are you sure about the horn? If you look closely it looks like the souzy has 3 valves and with that "S" style brace connecting the bow to the bell throat. I think it is a regular King sousaphone. Sounds like one too. Here is another link to the same band and same souzy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_9y7qvs ... re=related

Come join the King side, Kiltie  You know deep down you love the Kings as much as your Conns.

 At first I thought you were being serious and I was like WTF??? But then I read your post all the way through
I don't really care what some music "professor" has to say about Williams. His music sounds great; especially his early works. All composers "steal" from each other. Some of the most horrid music I have heard composed and performed was by college music professors. I had to sit and listen to that hot mess many times in college. :x

Oh yeah I have played that Chicago/Pokorny Youtube clip before. GREAT sound. :!:
The thing I really like about Pokorny is that he has such good musical ideas and that he translates it to the tuba so clearly. And that he maintains a clear centered sound while still keeping the sound very deep, full and round on the big York. 8) Many 6/4 tubas sound very woofy and muddy.

Tommy played his Mirafone 190 CC on the score that was actually used in the movie. That's the version you've linked to on YouTuba. This iteration was remastered and released for the 20th anniversary. If you listen to the whole score off the CD with a good pair of headphones, you can actually hear Tommy's sound banking off the walls and ceiling of the recording studio. I always thought of that horn as only half a tuba. The other half was the effect of it coupling with the room it was being played in. Truly a unique, omnipresent, visceral sound.

*However*

The very original release, way back in the day, was Norm Pearson on his 188. From what I can gather, it's not an uncommon practice for cues from a movie to be re-recorded specifically for the soundtrack release. When this was done for E.T., Tommy was perhaps unavailable for the date, and a young and upcoming stud was sent in to pinch hit. Pretty big shoes to fill, but Norm acquitted himself quite admirably.

Hah, I like the quote underneath the clip:

"Last time I saw something with that much balls a cowboy was trying stay on it for 8 seconds...."

Well since you and ZNCDandy say it's Tommy Johnson, I'll take your word for it. It's just confusing :? when you read and hear conflicting stories. I wish there would be a credit-roster for each film for the musicians who played on them. That way there would be no confusion and credit would be given to the correct player.
That said, I just listened to some Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom clips from Youtube. I knew for sure Johnson played on that, and when I listen closely the tuba sound is identical to the tuba sound on E.T. Amazing sound....I love it! :tuba:

Wellll....

Roger Bobo was actually the main participant on that recording, although Tommy did a couple of dates on it as well. This info came from Tommy himself. Although he didn't recall exactly which horn he was using, he thought it very well could've been his 190.
