Ewald Quintet #3, Which version?

I have found two versions of Quintet #3 by Victor Ewald. Empire Brass and Thomas

What is the difference between these two? Which is the preferred version?

Dear Matthew,

To put another option out there, I did version of all three Ewald Quintets in one book a few years back. I went to the original scores and transcribed as Ewald had written the music. Then I did a whole lot of editing to make slurring and articulations more consistent. You can find this version at various dealers or on my site below. The cost is $55.00 for the set.

The Thomas version is published by Music Express and after purchasing this company I decided to use Quintet 3 from my set above rather than continuing to print the Thomas edition, but you may still find some copies floating around. Besides some slurring and articulation differences, the main difference are better music layout and page turns.

The Empire version leaves some repeats out and when comparing to the original there were many changes from minor to major chords.

I am not sure if it is still in print, but there was also a version out there by Chester many years ago. This version includes all of the repeats.

Although repeats in most music is not generally an issue, Ewald actually wrote different music for each ending and to me it should be at least included so the players can choose whether to take or not to take them. My quintet chooses to leave them for fear of faces falling off...

Canadian Brass also has a version of 1-3 out. Haven't seen them yet.

I'm waiting for #4 to come out from someone where the cost is lower than $3 grillion. It's my favorite by a mile. Canadian Brass has indicated they are doing an edition of that for later release.

BTW, just wondering, BVD, why only the first 3? And where did you find the urtext of the first three? And where can I find the 4th?

We could debate for a while on this concerning #4, but from my research there are really only three quintets. The 4th was a string quintet or possibly even a brass quintet first and then became a brass quintet. It is very different from his other writings so I decided not to use it...Flame away!

It has been a long time since I did the set, but I found 2-3 from a Russian source. I am not sure if that would be considered urtext, but it was as close as I could find...

$3 grillion sounds like an awful lot!

Note: they aren't numbered in chronological order. #4 was actually the first written, followed by #'s 1, 2 & 3.
