One of the best tuba performances I ever heard on LP was this one http://www.amazon.com/Arcana-Integrales ... B0000042DU" target="_blank" target="_blank aided by a very generous (and appropraite for this piece) microphone placement. But who where these two awseome tuba players?

This looks to be an older recording since Zubin Mehta is conducting. So it is most likely Roger Bobo plus a friend. There were several players used over the years when they needed to double up, so we'll have to wait until somebody more knowledgable comes along to add their two cents worth and gives us the correct answer.

Yes, that Roger Bobo/Tommy Johnson team produced some spectacular tuba sounds. The huge greater Los Angeles/Hollywood area has had many fine tuba players over the years. But then you are from London, also filled with great musicians. Who are the leading studio and symphony tuba players currently working in the London area?

I don't really know I'm afraid. I'm sure others more in the know might chime in. Of course when I was a student (early 80s) John Flectcher was the main man and highly respected globally. But since he passed away so young I'm not sure British tuba players have really made an impact internationally. Very few of them seem to produce solo CDs like the Americans and Europeans. There's a sort of reverse snobbery going on and british professionals don't seem to take the tuba as seriously as others.

Jim Gourlay has of course done some internationally acclaimed things and Orin Marshall seems to be doing some extraordinary things on the fringes of tuba music. There are some tuba players from the brass band scene like Joseph Cook (Black Dyke Mills Band) and Les Neish (Fodens Band) who have done some great stuff.
