Finally the new Meinl-Weston 5450RA "Tuono" is done, after many test the final result is a rotary CC tuba with a huge sound, a response that I never found in any other rotary CC tuba and a low register that i can define with one word: impressive.
Soon will be available more photos and videos

Cheers

According to my Italian dictionary it means 'Thunder' :idea: I have just realised the model number - this must be a rotary version of the Thor?

Yes, I was involved in the develop of this tuba, as you say "Tuono" is the italian of Thunder, when me and Gerhard Meinl were talking about the name of this new tuba he suggested "Tuono" because I'm italian but also to identify this tuba as a different instrument from the Thor, and in fact it is; a new tuba, also if you start from the same bows and bell, is not only a different version of an existing model, sometimes going on with the same concepts drives you off road;
the taper and the lenght of the leadpipe, the size of the different slides, the design and many other things are completely different from a piston to a rotary tuba, is like to spek a different language : sometimes translate from our mother language doesn't work, we need to think with the new language in mind.
And this is what we did with the Tuono.

It may be too early to be asking this, but will a version of the Tuono be at the MidWest Band Clinic in December? I'm intrigued by the description, and can't wait to give it a try!

I actually got to play on this horn at ITEC in May. It has a wonderful dark sound, and felt very close to my Thor in terms of response and note slotting. It felt just a tiny bit darker in sound. It's a great horn!

we did some new improvements these days in terms of response and resonance of the whole instrument.
If you liked the one in Tucson you should try also this optimized version, I'm sure you will not be disappointed

Alessandro, You previously talked about the GR55 having a mellow tone in gold-brass - will the new Tuono be in gold-brass also?

I own an old MW 2155R. But I like to just call it a MW 5/4 rotary CC. These were only prototypes and never went into full production. I think there were only 20 - 25 made. There is no model # on the bell ........just "MEINL WESTON" in the trademark tuba logo on the bell, and "MADE IN GERMANY on the receiver and a serial #. GREAT deep sound with what I call "a warm 'growl'", similar to an Alex, but a bit more 'round', yet 'grainy'. The 2155R and the regular piston 2155 are completely different animals. That is one of the reasons why I refer to it as "MW 5/4 rotary CC". Mine needs a good cleaning and valve alignment. I have wondered about changing out the big mouthpipe and having a slightly smaller one put on. :idea:

The new MW 5450RA "Touno" sounds like it may be a better 'tweaked' and 'updated' 2155R. :tuba:
