What model is this Conn
Does anyone know the model of this Conn, does it play well, and is it worth $3000?

Looks to me like a Conn 20J...... Some people say they play pretty well, I think they are fun to play.... Would I pay $3000 for one? No.... You won't see many GREAT 20Js going for over $2000.... But those usually have an upright bell and not the bellfront. Just my 0.01 cents...

It is a Conn 20J - a little earlier than the one I have. Not worth $3000 though. Great looking horn.

I have one of those EXCEPT with FOUR valves... with a Wenger 'tuba-tamer' stand... cases and all that I'll sell you for slightly less money. I'll even throw in a 'beater' upright bell to complete the deal!
No... I won't haul it around for you. That's why it's for sale!

What does a tuba-tamer go for (used, in good working order)?TubaTinker wrote:I have one of those EXCEPT with FOUR valves... with a Wenger 'tuba-tamer' stand... cases and all that I'll sell you for slightly less money. I'll even throw in a 'beater' upright bell to complete the deal!

That Conn is definitely NOT worth $3000 - it is used, a bell-front BBb and has only 3 valves. $1500 is a more fair price for that horn. In general, I have noticed a tendency of people to over-price Conn tubas.

I saw this on the Local Craig's list. It does come with a hard case. I think a child is selling Dad's horn because he is too old or dead, so he is not playing anymore. Sentiment likely is causing them to over value the horn. I do not any information on condition.
Thanks for the opinions. I will pass on this one.

Here is a comparable Conn 20J "Ladyface" tuba for $1350. Included are the tuba, bell, and both cases for them:

I'm not speaking of the flimsy Chinese versions. I thought the 'real' ones were much more expensive but a quick check of the Wenger website lists them for $453. I would have guessed twice that! Anyway... I would think a good used one would still bring $200-250. There's really not much there to wear out or break.sloan wrote:What does a tuba-tamer go for (used, in good working order)?TubaTinker wrote:I have one of those EXCEPT with FOUR valves... with a Wenger 'tuba-tamer' stand... cases and all that I'll sell you for slightly less money.
