I was wondering what is the difference in sound between American, German and Czech vintage tubas. I have read that German have more focused sound while American ones more spread. Would like to know about your experiences of playing difference horns and what impressions did you have afterward.

I would probably put vintage German and Czech tubas in the same category.
This thread should give some information (and ask as many questions as it answers):

Marty's thread is right on about the sound differences between the American and German/Czech tubas. Generally, the American tubas have piston valves, a smaller bore, fatter bows and larger bell flare, which means they have a more conical taper and sound. The German/Czech style tubas have rotary valves, large bores, but with skinnier bows and a taller bell with a smaller flare. They are more cylindrical in taper and sound.

As far as the differences between vintage and new - both American and German - my ears like the vintage horns better. I have played on some very sweet old Holtons and Yorks as well as old Alexanders and Kruspes. Sound-wise, those old horns put most all new expensive horns to shame and can play well in-tune with a good repairman/brass tech and some TLC :tuba:
