For those of you playing Conn recording basses, I'd like to know which mouthpieces you're using. This past Thursday nite during a dance band rehearsal, I tried a Blokepiece ('Solo' under part with #2 top part) on a Conn 22J and it worked really, really well. If you haven't tried one, especially on these kinds of horns, you owe it yourself to do so.

I use a Conn Helleberg on my 20J and I love it!

I prefer a large mouthpiece on a Conn. Truth be told I prefer a large mouthpiece on just about any BBb or CC horn...

I do have a Helleberg 7, but after playing on my large custom piece, I feel like my embouchure is being strangled by the 7...

Remembering to use one souzy bit, yes, either Helleberg (120S or 7B) are, of course, standard. A PT82 works well with all tubas with large throats.

I've gravitated back to a custom Zottola mouthpiece I had made in the 80's for a large Besson. This piece has a shallow (C) cup, a fairly wide C4-like rim with a 36 mm inner diameter and a 9 mm throat. Wade suggested I use a shallower cup on my 6/4 Holton and he was right. This mpc seems to give more clarity to the Holton, my Martin Mammoth and Conn 20J. The low end is very free blowing and I can play comfortably above the staff as well. It's definitely going into my mouthpiece gig bag.

I've used the Blokepiece symphony model wirh a #1 rim on the Holton for a couple of Trad jazz gigs and was pleasantly surprised with the response.

36mm inner rim? Dang. I have found that even 33.5mm rims are a bit uncomfortable.

Well, the old Conn 2 was once considered the classic choice for these horns. They still show up on ebay or some music stores' Used inventory.
