Will dental implant or appliance affect playing?

My dentist has recommended implants to replace a broken crown on my two upper front teeth. The specialist he recommended said that my embrochure should not be affected by the permanent implants.

I am more concerned about the temporary appliance used for the month or more while the implants are growing into the bone. One type is called a "flipper" (a temporary bridge held in by a false palate and wires) and another is called an "Essix" (a plastic mold over the uppers with cosmetic replacements for the missing teeth). Has anyone any experience with either of these appliances who could tell me how they affect playing, talking or eating?

you will not enjoy either appliance.you will probably take it out to play?????????? It will take approx 4 mos for the implants to integrate. I make both type of appliances for my pts but have never had anyone ask about playing an instrument while wearing them. The essex appliance would probably be more comfortable. dr simmons

I wore a flipper for a few months, and I'm sure I tried playing with it, but for the life of me, I can't remember whether I left it in. Regardless of in or out, it didn't affect me too terribly, but I had only the one (upper stage left of the two front teeth).

Off on a little tangent: I tried eating with a flipper, but couldn't tolerate it. My dentist had warned me that he'd lost count of the number of folks that had inadvertently thrown away their flippers with their refuse.
I made a habit of wrapping my flipper in a tissue on which I'd write in big letters "SAVE". Saved my bacon a couple times. I broke it once, but never lost it. Also kept my fellow diners from having to look at it.

I wore the wire-held flipper for my lower front teeth and did a concert on tuba about 24 hours after a one-session surgery for extractions combined with inserting the implants. I am a person who uses very little pressure on the mouthpiece, so experienced no discomfort at all. However, I backed off on ff passages and marcatos.

I did have trouble with meats and lettuce getting caught in the flipper, and sometimes I just left it out unless going to a social event.

Thanks to you all for your collective wisdom. My dental braintrust is now pondering their recommendation so I'm in limbo at the moment.

I've had a flipper for almost 20 years. Didn't bother me once. Don't sweat it one bit.
