Handbuilt Nirschl or not?

How do you know if a Nirschl is handbuilt? I bought mine from Custom in 1997 ( the horn is stamped 97 on all the valves). It is the 4/4 model.

Is there a perceived difference between handbuilt and non-handbuilt models?

The 4/4 Nirschls are not hand-built, no matter what year. The 6/4 York models are.

Actually, Mr. Nirschl was offering two versions of his 4/4 when I bought mine in 2001.

There was the 4/4 silverplated (B&M 5625 or WN-15) which was about 15000 DM (prior to the coversion over to euros). This one was partially handmade, although I don't know to what extent or what parts.

The 4/4 handmade one (sometimes) in raw brass was going for $US 11,500. I believe one of these was for sale at Baltimore Brass sometime when I was looking for mine.

I never actually got to play on a fully handbuilt one, but I love the horn that I have! Hope this helps.
