Hello TubeNet,
I need some help and I'm sure somebody on here would be able to point me in the right direction. I have a tuba student who's interested in expanding his upright bass skills (wants to play jazz and orchestral stuff) and already plays electric bass. His parents asked if I could help find them find a good used bass. Anyone out there have any advice? Feel free to post here or if you feel more comfortable, emailing me directly.

This might be a good time to bring the string bass teacher into the picture. I bought a bass and learned to play on my own, and I did a good job at neither - I bought a bass that isn't that great, and my technique isn't that great. Of the various instruments I have played in public, that's the one I think would have benefited the most from some instruction.

I actually bought two basses, but luckily was able to return the second to its previous owner. At the time of purchase, we took it to a local violinmaker for an appraisal. Later, I took it back there for some kind of adjustment, I forget, and was informed that it was misdesigned - the top was too shallow or something, an obvious and grievous flaw that accounted for the problems I was having and couldn't be fixed. This was the very same person who appraised the instrument a couple months earlier and had somehow failed to mention that. If a teacher is for some reason unable to help evaluate potential candidates, at least he might be able to suggest a place that does an honest and competent appraisal.

They did and were unable to secure his help for whatever reason, so they've come to me now. Where would be a good place to point them to purchase some suggested brands? Thanks
