Many of us will be either playing or singing this piece this week. I was just wondering if there was a favorite recording lurking out there. Or maybe you have played it enough not to want to hear it again at all.
I'll start with the old Phillip Jones, Cambridge Singers conducted by Rutter.

That's the best one in my eyes too.
Great to play on BBb.

Everyone has probably already found it, but here's a link to YouTube with a performance by the Cambridge Singers with Mr. Rutter conducting
AND with sheet music being shown.

That link is neat, and the right recording in my book. My only complaint is they quit after the first movement. I know that is all that sometimes gets played but there are some unbelievable sounds in the last two movements.

I do think that is the Phillip Jones recording but I agree, something happened to the low frequencies in the translation to YouTube. My CD version cranks! I wonder who was playing tuba on that recording. It lists the date as 2005 but I always thought that the Gloria with Phillip Jones was earlier than that. Maybe I should try to find the insert somewhere.......hopeless.

It was recorded earlier than that (1983) and it's Fletcher with PJBE and the Cambridge Singers/Rutter. CD is called Gloria

But the Gloria has been used on many re releases.
And the low frequencies are certainly clear, maybe sometimes too clear (!), on the CD!

[really unpopular statement]
I think the Rutter Gloria is ridiculously boring to listen to.

I've never played it before, so perhaps that is the appeal of this piece for tuba players.

I couldn't agree more. Just plain boring. I have heard that sentiment many times from audience members.

I have played this work COUNTLESS times. Fun to play in spots, but really, just another tuba part. The best part about it is that countless numbers of mediocre choirs can sing this piece, which translated, in my career, to countless opportunities to take the money and run.

Bloke, what recording do you like (or rather, in what recording can you hear what the tuba is doing, which might not be the same thing...)?

The fun seems to all be in the 1st movement and most of the music in the 2nd. I don't like the 3rd as much. I've only been able to perform the whole thing, bass trombone, once. Most of the time the choir directors seem to use only the 1st movement as an introit thing. Is this a local thing or do you guys find yourselves playing all 3 movements?
