I found a recording of Ewald 1 & 3 quintets by the Philadelphia Orchestra Brass Section hidden in a collection that included the orchestral version of Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet. Odd pairing: quintet and ballet orchestra?

However, it is a recent recording with Carol Jantsch playing tuba and as Keith Jackson used to say, "Boy, howdy, that was Jim-dandy." A fine recording and worth getting on iTunes for a measley $3.00 for Quintet No. 1.

Is this a one or two CD set? Price is way too high for just one.

This is a two disc set that was originally planned to be just one, with no Ewald. However, due to Eschenbach's unusually slow tempos in the Tchaikovsky works, they couldn't fit everything on one disc. So, rather than pay the whole orchestra for a studio session to fill out the second disc, (the rest of the disc is made up of live recordings) the record company came up with the idea for the Ewald quintets.

There is a Mahler 6th out there that has chamber music on it as well, for much the same reason. Eschenbach sure does like to linger over things.
