Tuba/F horn duets

Arthur Frackenpohl wrote one that was available in the 80s, but I'm not sure it's still in print. You might check Robert King Music (I'm not sure of the web address, but the business was(?) located in North Easton, MA in the basement under a barber shop (I visited it once in 77'). Good luck..

Two nice pieces are those recorded by Roger Bobo with him playing the contrabass horn. Both are on the Gravity is Light Today CD. They are by Roger Kellaway, as I recall: Dance of the Ocean Breeze and Sonora. Both are available directly from BIM.

Alec Wilder has a couple tuba-horn-piano trios. They are a challenge, but I really enjoyed playing one of them on my Junior Recital a few years back with my girl.

If anyone is interested, I have a set of 11 duets for Horn and Tuba. I arranged them whenever I needed something for wife and I to play for a church service. Some are fairly challenging.

Ken Singleton has arranged 14th century pieces for horn and tuba. Ars Nova Duets are published by Queen City Brass Publications. Although not technically too diffucult, the tuba part does go up to c and d above the staff at times. My daughter, who is a horn major at Ithaca College, and I enjoy playing these pieces together.

Alec Wilder also wrote a collection of 12 duets for horn and tuba in addition to the piano trios. The Mozart 12 horn duets in C work well with horn and tuba. If your horn player is comfortable with transpositions you can either read the bass in C (tc) or Eb (bc). Both of these are probably available at RK or SMS of Portland.

Your french horn player *has* to be able to transpose because the first part of these go skyhigh! (up to G 4 ledger lines above the staff...) Transposed down to C or even Bb makes them manageable for normal good players.

These are pre-transposed, so if you're wondering about the high notes, transpose them back up to (notated) C
