Another tuba

I already own a cc horn, but i want a bass tuba to compliment. It would be used for solo and occasional quintet work. Would an Eb or F tuba better suit that need?

Depends on the bucks and what you can justify.

For myself, besides my big horn, I scored a decent ancient Eb cheap to use whenever it made more sense in the orchestra, got a 184 CC to use for quintet, saved up the money, then bought a 6/4 F.

A small F tuba will do what you want.

I reached the conclusion that a large F tuba best complimented my Neptune CC.

I just love the tone of a German F tuba and it is slightly easier in the high register.

However, a large Eb tends to be a more versatile all-purpose tuba, so which depends on your playing requirements and what size CC you play.

I like my Eb for both solo and quintet work, but I think most Fs give you more of a contrast from the sound of your CC. The main thing is to find a horn, whether Eb or F, that allows you to get the sound you are looking for. Many of the larger bass tubas, both Eb or F, can sound very similar to a CC in many situations. Your best bet is to go somewhere where you can try some out and decide what works for you.

I can play my Eb in tune and with confidence. I was never sure about either aspect with any F. Having 3 CCs (S-L-XXL) is a luxury, but they aren't eating anything.
