The above one had super intonation. The only note I noticed that was off was 8th partial F which had to be played something like 52. I don't remember about the notes right below but they may have been fine with conventional fingerings.
I do like the Kanstuls; they are a wonderful choice for a new horn. I think the Rusk York F's are more comfortable and to me, at least, there's that strong draw to a vintage horn and the inherent charm.
IMO, those little Yorks are great (had 2 chances to buy super clean stock ones for $400 and $600, sigh...) and the medium, and probably even more so the small, Kings like what I have have a wonderful sound and low register but THESE are the gems (bloke speaks well of the slightly taller small Conn Eb's with the leadpipe before the valves but I've not played one)! Excellent pitch (spot on 5th partial, slightly sharp 6th, everything else is good), good enough low register (better with a larger than stock (.620) valve set?), and a sound that would blow your mind. All the charm of this kind of horn but with a incredibly clear sound. Mine was beat up but I still used it for everything for the few years I had it- brass band, quintet,10-piece, concert band, trombone choir parts when I was in between basses, college audition (played the Ride!),... That horn spoke to me more than any I've owned since. I would absolutely love to find an immaculate one. Pure red-blooded sound.
The moment I most remember when I -really- felt like a musician
was when I was singing on this on the Wells Fargo and Shipoopi songs in the Music Man. Still gives me shivers!!
