Not have heard of a piston F, but apparently a compact 4/4 ROTARY CC is in the near future (I'm thinking HB-2 esque)

PS A Cimbasso is one of the next in line from China...BTW, when I think of a 5/4 rotary CC tuba, I think of something like a PT-6, HB-6, or an Alex 163 (even with the 16.5" bell)...a HB-2 like instrument is a 4/4 type horn.

Hmm...thanks for the size clarification. I thought the HB-2 and Miraphone 1291/291 tubas were classified as 5/4, but it sounds like the above mentioned horns fit the category better.

Brass itself doesn't cost much, overhead on Chinese labor can't amount to much either, and tooling-up without a whole lot of cry-babying about the cost is what the Chinese seem to excel at these days. If they offered a decent 6/4 at $3,000, I'd be astonished if it wasn't profitable.

From what I have heard there are three reasons for the current small market of 6/4 tubas;

1. The cost (by far the main reason).
2. The modern idea that tubists should be soloists and need a multiple purpose instrument.
3. And the frequent advice that a 4/4 is sufficient propagated when the Miraphone186 became available - which was obviously not the case in the USA 40+ years ago going by the number of 2xJ and other large tubas previously used.

I think UncleBeer is correct that lot of hobby tubists would decide to get a 6/4 if good inexpensive Chinese ones become available.

The problem is that they seem to be pricing themselves out of the market. The new piston CC that M&M is selling looks very interesting. BUT, it is about four grand. For that price, there are a lot of very good lightly used instruments available. (Or I could buy two 186 clones.)

What?!? If they sold a decent 5 valve 6/4 for 3 grand, everyone on here except me would have one. They'd sell faster than hotcakes laced with cocaine. Just about everyone on here thinks that a huge tuba is ESSENTIAL for friggin everything.

I am sure, just as with an Asian piston F, a 6/4 Asian piston CC is more of a matter of when, than if.

And the way the Asian 6v rotor F plays, I am beginning to think who cares about an Asian piston F...the 6v horn is amazing!
